Roller coasters are complex machines made up of multiple simple
machines. Each simple machine that makes up part of a roller coaster
changes the force and controls the motion of the cars during the ride.
A lever pulls the roller coaster up the hills, and inclined planes are used to build up speed during the ride. Pulleys are used on the first hill, which is very steep, to lift the cars up to the top.
Screws play a very important role in making sure the roller coaster is safe. They hold the cars, track, safety bars and seats in place. A wheel and axle mechanism is built underneath the cars and is what allows the roller coaster to move along the track.

Your challenge
To design a roller coaster using your knowledge of forces and simple machines.
Step 1
Draw your design in your literacy book. Clearly label it with the names of the simple machines you need and record all the materials you will need to make your roller coaster.
Step 2
Use recycled materials to build it. Make sure you take photos as you go to show all of your developments.
Materials you will might need;
• Cardboard
• Marbles or balls
• Straws
• String
