The week after we went to the Maungatapu underpass we did some art of our favourite machines down there and then we drew it. When we were finished drawing it, we used an app called Wordfoto. We used action words (verbs) to make our computer picture. From Hayley smith

Charlotte has written about a lever. A lever is like a see saw because the lever is the part you sit on. Levers make life easier by helping us to lifting things. Sometimes they use them at car shops when they lift up the car to replace the wheel. By reporter Scarlett

We are learning about roller coasters. Brendon in our class has even made a rail made out of rolls, sticks and tape. We are really excited to see his roller coaster on the rails. Roller coasters work on inclined planes. A ramp is a inclined plane because it's on a slope. The rails are inclined planes because they are on a slope. By Reporter Jackson

Yesterday we did a Maori song called Kei Mai. We got to be the leader to teach the class, but first Whaea Pa taught the class. I felt happy when I was the leader because I want to stand in front of the class all the time . By Hayley

Crafting roller coasters Yesterday we were doing craft. The craft type was: roller coasters. We could choose which materials to craft from. I chose to craft from: 1 card box , 2 pieces of cardboard, 2 pipe cleaners and 1 hot glue gun. We weren't aloud to just have a plain box though. By Reporter Rhiannon

Two weeks ago we did some Matariki art work with Whaea Pa but some people ripped the tin foil we panted the tin foil black then when it was dry we did a little bit of sketching on the black tin foil. Matariki is the seven sister stars of the Maori new year. When you see them you get good luck and when you can't see them you get bad luck. They sometimes hide behind the clouds, some times they hibernate By Hayley

How do engineers start a new project?

Here is an interesting video that might help us identify the steps that engineers take to identify and then solve a problem.

We have been learning how to use verbs and nouns. See if you can spot the verbs and nouns in Daniel's writing. On the weekend, on a rainy day, early in the morning, I got out of bed to get dressed out of my pj's. I had breakfast then I went to watch tv. I opened the curtains then saw a amazing sun rise. It looked so worth a photo. Later my mum called me so I went to see her. She pointed at a plane that left a trail of smoke. I was so amazed I was stunned. I saw amazing lighting, thunder and dark clouds in the night sky. I also saw patches of stars

We are learning about roller coasters🚝 A roller coaster is three machines at the same time. Two of the machines are called simple machines. One of the simple machines is called a lever; the other is called wheel & axel. The other machine is called a complex machine. A complex machine is a power-driven machine; it runs on electricity. Roller coasters can be designed / decorated with all sorts of different coloured paint like fire & flowers. Roller coasters are fast & really fun! I❤️roller coasters! By reporter Rhiannon.

Roller Coasters

Roller coasters are complex machines made up of multiple simple machines. Each simple machine that makes up part of a roller coaster changes the force and controls the motion of the cars during the ride.

A lever pulls the roller coaster up the hills, and inclined planes are used to build up speed during the ride. Pulleys are used on the first hill, which is very steep, to lift the cars up to the top.

Screws play a very important role in making sure the roller coaster is safe. They hold the cars, track, safety bars and seats in place. A wheel and axle mechanism is built underneath the cars and is what allows the roller coaster to move along the track.

Your challenge
To design a roller coaster using your knowledge of forces and simple machines.

Step 1
Draw your design in your literacy book.  Clearly label it with the names of the simple machines you need and record all the materials you will need to make your roller coaster.

Step 2
Use recycled materials to build it.  Make sure you take photos as you go to show all of your developments.

Materials you will might need;
• Cardboard
• Marbles or balls

• Straws
• String
• Paper plates
• Pencils
• Tape / glue
• Paper clips

• Toilet rolls
• Egg cartons
• Paddle pop sticks

• Pipe cleaners
• Balsa wood
• BBQ skewers
• PVC pipe
• Cotton reels
• Fishing sinkers

• Plastic cups
• Lego
• Bottle caps

How safe is your roller coaster?  How can you test it?
